The Capcom Pro Tour returns this weekend with the final three regular season events before Capcom Cup in February.
To get ready for the homestretch as well as all of 2022, I wanted to take this week’s newsletter to run a quiz to see how much you’ve been following the stats of 2021.
There are 15 questions, some easy and some really difficult, it’s all based on how much you follow the stats as well as the newsletter. You might be able to find a lot of the answers in the database while some are in past issues of the newsletter. The answers are below.
The Questions
Question 1
Nine players got out of The Pit — down 2-0 1-0 — in a CPT Top 8 match in 2021. For the first time, it happened in consecutive Top 8 matches. Who were the two players who won and who did they beat?
Question 2
In December, Gamerbee won the Global Esports Games’ Street Fighter V tournament in a Top 8 that had some hefty competition. Of the players in the Top 8 in the Singapore event, there were 3 who have qualified for Capcom Cup. Who were the three players?
Question 3
By rule, a player can qualify for Capcom Cup without having to win one of the CPT events. Two players have done it: Chris CCH and Brian F. Losers Final became the de-facto qualifying match to get to Capcom Cup, which both players won. Who did the players defeat to qualify?
Question 4
Kusanagi has gone back to character select 12 times following a loss in a CPT Top 8 match. He is 10-2 in the following games, by far the best mark of any player in 2021. Who has the second-most wins, and how many?
Question 5
Brian F’s run in his two CPT events were both stopped by Rob TV, but he qualified for Capcom Cup anyway. What’s notable is the bracket runs. Rob TV won Winners Final and Grand Final both times against Brian F, a combined 12 games. How many games in both events combined did Brian F lose to players not named Rob TV?
Question 6
For five years — FIVE YEARS! — Ryu did not win a CPT Top 8 game. It was depressing for the Ryu army who hoped that one day he would not only get used in a game but win and perhaps do more. From 2016 to 2020, the only player who used Ryu in a CPT Top 8 game was Caba, who went 0-3 in the games played. Then came 2021 and the drought ended when Ryu won a game thanks to … who?
Question 7
Papoi joined Monsieur Crimson in rare territory, becoming the second player in 2021 to win a CPT event when starting Top 8 in losers bracket. He finished the job with Laura, surviving a close Grand Final before running away with it in Reset Final. It would be easy to say the last player to win a regular season CPT event was Idom, and that’s correct. But who was the last Laura user to win a CPT event not named Idom?
Question 8
The LG Fight Night event was notable for the adjusted ruleset, with the clock modified from 99 seconds to 60 seconds. I mentioned the effects of that when talking about Daigo. He has never won a CPT Top 8 round on time over, but he won 7 rounds in the LG Fight Night event on time over. Surprisingly, Daigo’s 7 was not the leader in that category in that event. Who was, and how many?
Question 9
Red Bull Kumite in Las Vegas was the triumph of Problem X. Down 3-0 in Grand Final, Problem X found a way to overtake NL and claim the ultimate prize. One of the weirdest stats in that Grand Final was Problem X losing a game with three different characters — Bison/Dictator, Cammy and E. Honda. But the weird stat is well overshadowed by his tournament run. He is now the all-time winningest player in Red Bull Kumite history, in the Street Fighter V era. How many wins does he have in the series?
Question 10
The4Philzz is the best Falke player in the world, with the most Top 8 wins, consistent victories outside of CPT and his high ranking. Winning the first CPT United Kingdom event to qualify for Capcom Cup was another milestone in his career. However, he started Grand Final of the CPT event using another character instead of Falke. Who was the character?
Question 11
“Glenn, these are some extremely tough questions,” you’re probably saying at this point. Totally understand, so here’s a layup: who are the two characters who have not made an appearance yet in a CPT Top 8 match this season?
Question 12
OK, I’ll go for back-to-back layups here. Karin has won five CPT events this season. Can you name the Karin players who have won those five events?
Question 13
One of the amazing parts about tracking stats is seeing streaks come to an end. A hidden streak that took place was Kolin in Grand Final of CPT events. For the first seven times Kolin was in the series, that player won the event. The eighth appearance was not as fruitful, she finally lost. Kawano was the Kolin user who ultimately fell to … who?
Question 14
There was an insane amount of chatter when Cammy claimed her third CPT win of the season within a span of four events, and right near the beginning of the season. Oh no. Remember the days when Cammy got to Grand Final only to lose? It seemed as though things had turned around and the 2021-22 season was going to be nothing but Cammy. However, Cammy’s fortunes have not been as promising since those three titles, she has been in Grand Final twice and lost. So for now, Gama, NL and Mago are the only ones to have won a CPT event this season with Cammy. Which player won their event first, followed by who and who?
Question 15
Billydate qualified for Capcom Cup using Ed. It was not the smoothest of roads, as he got shut down by Jabhim in Grand Final. Thanks to being the Winners Bracket representative, Billydate made Reset Final pay off, and he’s onto the big dance. Billydate did not win a round in his Grand Final loss but won Reset Final anyway. Including Billydate, how many times has that happened in CPT history where a player did not win a round in Grand Final but bounced back to win Reset Final?
The answers
Question 1: The consecutive comebacks from The Pit happened in the first CPT event of the year, Japan 1, and it happened in both first-round losers bracket matches. Momochi defeated Fuudo, and then Itabashi Zangief defeated Daigo.
Question 2: I was surprised that the Top 8 had so many familiar faces, with the three Capcom Cup qualifiers being MenaRD, RonaldinhoBR and The4Philzz.
Question 3: Chris CCH defeated Samurai in Losers Final of the North America West 2 event to qualify. Brian F defeated Dual Kevin in Losers Final of the North America Midwest 2 event.
Question 4: Infiltration has gone back to character select 5 times following a loss. He’s 4-1 in those games, second in wins only to Kusanagi.
Question 5: Zero! According to smash.gg, Brian F, in both Midwest tournaments, did not drop a game to anyone except Rob TV, 16-0 in games in the first event, 14-0 in games in the second event.
Question 6: Momochi broke the seal at CPT Online Japan 1, winning Ryu’s first game in 5 years. The strange part about it: he picked Ryu in his first match against Fuudo and did not win a game, switched to a different character and won by getting out of The Pit. In Losers Quarterfinal, he went back to Ryu and defeated John Takeuchi.
Question 7: El Tigre is the Laura user! He defeated Doomsnake in both Grand Final and Reset Final to win CPT Online Latin America West on May 18, 2019.
Question 8: It was Oil King who was the king of time over wins in the LG Fight Night event, getting nine in the tournament.
Question 9: By winning Red Bull Kumite in Las Vegas, Problem X improved to 14-7 all time in Red Bull Kumite matches in the Street Fighter V era.
Question 10: It really was a stunning moment when The4Philzz, who rolled with Falke throughout the first UK tournament, decided to start Grand Final with Akira. Technically, Akira is also credited with the Grand Final win because The4Philzz used her despite not winning any games.
Question 11: It’s Blanka and Oro. See, that was easy.
Question 12: Karin users have won 5 CPT events this year thanks to the quartet of Kilzyou, Punk, Rob TV (two wins) and Robinho.
Question 13: Daigo ended the Kolin grand final streak by defeating Kawano in the third Japan qualifier.
Question 14: Mago won the first CPT event of the year, Japan 1, on April 18. On May 2, Gama defeated Kusanagi in the Central America West 1 qualifier. Two weeks later, NL defeated Infiltration in the first Eastern Asia qualifier.
Question 15: Four players did not win a round in their Grand Final loss, only to bounce back and win Reset Final to take the event. Billydate joins Julio Fuentes, Sunmate and Punk as the ones to do it, and the first in 2 years to pull off the feat. I talked more about it in a previous issue.
